Cam’ron has recalled having a “weird” conversation with JAY-Z after they reunited on stage at the Roc Nation founder’s historic B-sides concert in 2019.
Speaking on his new YouTube show Talk With Flee, Killa Cam described the events of the night which saw him make a surprise appearance to perform “Welcome to New York” alongside his former label boss, with whom he had a well-documented falling out in the 2000s.
He then detailed a conversation he had with Hov after the show: “He texts me, ‘Yo, that was dope last night.’ [I replied,] ‘That was really dope, I appreciate you guys putting this shit to bed.’ He was like, ‘Yeah, man. See how much shit we can do when n-ggas stop acting like there’s fake beef out here. That shit slows shit down.'”
Recalling his bemused reaction to JAY-Z’s text, Cam continued: “I didn’t know how to take that. I didn’t know what he meant when he text that. I replied, ‘Well, no matter what, you, Dame and Biggs gave me the opportunity to feed my family legally, so I don’t have no problem with it.’
“But inside, I’m like, ‘Why would he even text that?’ I don’t know. Even to this day, I don’t have no problem but I thought that was weird.”
The Dipset legend went on to discuss his current relationship with JAY-Z and the prospect of them working together again.
“I haven’t seen or spoke to JAY-Z since then,” he said. “I respect the hustler in JAY-Z — pause — I respect the music he does. Are we good? I hope we good! I don’t know. If I see him and we speak, cool. If not, it’s not gonna make or break what I got going on.
“As far as a collab going on, I dn’t know what a collab is. I’m not doing music full-time. Obviously, he’s not doing music full-time. So that’s not really on my plate right now but I do respect everything [he] got going on businesswise.
The former Roc-A-Fella labelmates have had a mixed relationship over the years.
On the 2006 song “You Gotta Love It,” Cam’ron explicity dissed JAY-Z, rapping: “But your publishing should go to Mrs. Wallace / Honest, stealing B.I.G. shit, he made two albums, you wildin.”
Jay would later reference his feud with Cam and much of Roc-A-Fella in his verse on Drake’s “Pound Cake: “I’ve done made more millionaires than the lotto did / Dame made millions, Biggs made millions / Ye made millions, Just made millions / Lyor made millions, Cam made millions / Beans would tell you if he wasn’t in his feelings.”
Cam then replied on “Come and Talk To Me”: “She said, ‘Jay made you a millionaire?’ And looked me in the eyes / Said cake, cake, cake, got that from the pies / We made each other millions, that was my reply / had a mill before I met him, baby, that ain’t no lie.”
