Miss. G has got it going on in the rap world, collaborating with a who’s who of artists on her new album KMIM (Keep Me In Mind), including the opening track “Talk Heavy” featuring Nicki Minaj.
In this exclusive Q&A, Miss. G opens up about the stories behind the music, lessons learned along the way, and what keeps their passion alive.
Loud Magazine: Who are your biggest musical influences?
Miss G: The most biggest root girl influencers are Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, and Patti LaBelle.
Loud Magazine: What non-musical influences (books, movies, art, etc.) inspire your work?
Miss G: Coming to America starring Eddie Murphy.
Loud Magazine: Is there a particular song or album that has significantly influenced your career?
Miss G: Yes, the first song that I have written, the song title was I am me.
Loud Magazine: How do your personal experiences shape your music?
Miss G: Coming from a military background, it’s been independent, knowing your worst, having stability and believing in yourself and reaching for my dreams and goals.
Loud Magazine: Have your influences changed over the years?
Miss G: My influences have not changed, but I have added more to it. Whitney Houston, besides her troubles through her last days, I believe she was a great mentor and someone to look up to.
Loud Magazine: What role does nature or your environment play in your songwriting?
Miss G: I will say the air that I breathe, the trees, and the flowers in the grass play a big role in my music and life in general, being alive.
Loud Magazine: When did you first realize you wanted to be a musician?
Miss G: I became a writer listening to Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight, Whitney Houston, and Patti LaBelle. I just liked the songs and the lyrics that they were singing; that’s what inspired me, and of course, I don’t want to forget Sade. I love her music. I love her personality.
Loud Magazine: What was the first song you ever wrote, and what inspired it?
Miss G: My first song that I have written was titled I AM ME. I AM ME was an inspirational song regarding my life, my goals, and my inspiration to stand above the crowd. I am missing self-love, loving yourself, loving your family, and being positive. That’s what the world needs: love.
Loud Magazine: How did you get started in the music industry?
