President Trump has presented medals to this year’s Kennedy Centre Honourees in the Oval Office.
The President celebrated a star-studded group of the nation’s most “acclaimed and renowned performers”.
Wearing a tuxedo, he awarded gold and navy medallions to actor Sylvester Stallone, singers Gloria Gaynor and George Strait, actor-singer Michael Crawford, and members of the rock band KISS.
“This is perhaps the most accomplished and renowned class of Kennedy Centre Honourees ever assembled,” Trump said proudly.
The Kennedy Centre Honours are annual recognitions given to artists in the performing arts for their lifetime contributions to American culture. The awards have been presented every year since 1978 and conclude each December with a gala celebrating five Honourees inside the Kennedy Centre Opera House in Washington, DC.
Although the awards typically go to individuals, they have on occasion been presented to duos or musical groups, as well as to musicals and television programs.
More than 250 recipients have received the Kennedy Centre Honours since the program began.
The honour awarded to stand-up comedian and actor Bill Cosby in 1998 was revoked in 2018 following his sexual assault conviction.
Trump presented each of the newest Honourees with a redesigned medal created and donated by Tiffany & Co.
The 48th Kennedy Centre Honours ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sunday evening.
