DJ, producer, and influencer, DJ SoulChild AC is set to release his debut album, Douby, featuring the single “Eat It Up (Get up) Feat Juiiciana.” The album highlights Black artists across a variety of genres, all coming together under the creative direction of DJ SoulChild AC.
Few can say they have the drive and resilience of DJ SoulChild AC. Years ago, while working at a local Target, DJ SoulChild AC would take his breaks at the neighboring Guitar Center where a friend worked. There, he focused on learning how to work DJ equipment until his confidence and skills grew enough to impress his DJ friends. “They didn’t take me seriously until I got good fast,” adds DJ SoulChild AC. “A few months later, I entered a competition. I lost, but it was rewarding. Three months after that, I was DJing in nightclubs.” DJ SoulChild AC had found his calling.
In 2017, he decided to add production to his skillset. “I didn’t want to stop with DJing,” shares DJ SoulChild AC. “So, I got into making beats. I learned producing from YouTube, focusing on Ableton as my first DAW. I had to play catch up because I started as an older artist. But a lot of the greats started later, so my time will come.”
The moniker “DJ SoulChild AC” was born from a conversation with a fellow DJ. “We were drunk and coming up with names. I couldn’t think of one, so he thought of it for me - SoulChild. He said, ‘You’re young in the DJ game, but you’ve got a lot of soul. You know a lot of old school music.’ He was right. My mom has a giant collection of 70s, 80s, and 90s music. I was very knowledgeable about older music.” Because “SoulChild” was already in use by a German artist, DJ SoulChild AC added the “AC” for Atlantic City to represent where he was born and raised.
His upcoming album, Douby, is a 15-track collection. The music can best be described as the culmination of hip hop, R&B, and Brazilian funk. “The album took 6-7 months to do,” explains DJ SoulChild AC. “I wanted to create a Black Diaspora album featuring Black genres and artists, highlighting their skills as vocalists and artists alongside my skills as a producer.”
DJ SoulChild AC’s three favorite tracks on the album are “Envy, Feat Nova The Rebel” “The Movement Feat Jordan Isiah,” and “Studio 54.” According to DJ SoulChild AC, “Studio 54” is the only song on the album that is pure House. “I love the disco aspect,” he shares. “I’m obsessed with disco music. This song can be played at any House festival or club. It’s perfect to me.”
To date, the pre-release feedback on the album has been overwhelmingly positive. DJ SoulChild AC hopes to place in the Billboard Top 200 to bring more awareness to his fellow artists and work on more future collaborations. He also wants to make a statement with his music. “I have very strong political beliefs,” shares DJ SoulChild AC. “I lost my DJ career in New Jersey because of it. This album is my way to say screw it. If the people want my music, you’ll have to book me and my views.”
Douby is available on all streaming platforms, with promotional support from Starlight PR.
