Madonna has dealt with age related criticism for much of her career, and the conversation continues even now. This time, she has found support from another major name in music.
In a TikTok video shared on Wednesday (April 8), Doja Cat came to Madonna’s defense after seeing comments claiming the pop icon is “too old” to still be performing. In the close to two minute selfie video, Doja said she felt both amused and frustrated by people telling Madonna “to stop” under clips of her live performances.
“It’s interesting to me because, it’s like, you’re telling a musician who makes music, who performs it as a job, to stop doing it?” the rapper says. “I’m trying to wrap my head around that.”
Doja then wondered whether the negativity comes from the fact that the “Vogue” artist is “an older woman who feels sexy.”
“Is that why you want her to get off stage? Because you feel threatened by an older woman who can do her job forever?” Doja asks, adding that Madonna is simply continuing something she is passionate about while fans continue to show up to support her. She then joked that maybe the critics just have “something personal happening in there” and that “nobody else knows it and only you do.”
“Is that why you’re upset? Aww,” she says with a laugh before catching herself. “I’m sorry, it’s not funny.”
Doja then pretends to wipe away tears while saying that “it is sad” and joking that she will cry right along with them.
“I’m so sorry,” she says dramatically as the clip comes to a close.
More recently, Madonna performed a small scale show during a Dolce & Gabbana fashion event in Milan last month. Before that, the icon wrapped up her record setting Celebration Tour, playing to packed arenas throughout Europe and the Americas and finishing with a free concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio De Janeiro that drew more than 1.6 million people.
Doja Cat’s latest appearance onstage came during the Global Citizen Move Afrika festival in South Africa this past March, following an extended run of shows supporting her Billboard 200 No. 4 album Vie. Tour Ma Vie picks back up on May 19 in Dublin, continues across Europe, then heads to the United States before ending on December 1 at Madison Square Garden.
