Piero, the Argentine singer and songwriter whose distinctive voice and music connected with generations of Latin listeners, has died at 81.
An announcement shared on his social media pages confirmed that he died in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on 7 October.
The Instagram statement said: "It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Piero at the age of 81."
"His voice, his songs, and his message of peace remain with us forever. His light will continue to shine wherever his music reaches. His family and friends thank you for your messages. Safe travels, dear Piero."
Born Piero Antonio Franco De Benedictis, he became widely known as Piero following the success of his first album, Mi Viejo, which featured the song of the same name.
Written as an affectionate tribute to his father, the track remains a familiar choice at birthday celebrations across South America, where families use it to honour their own fathers.
Piero wrote Mi Viejo with José Tcherkaski, and the song earned a place in the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2007.
His contribution to music was recognised again in 2016, when he received a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
His most recent tour took place in June last year. Named Piero, Mi Querido Viejo (My Dear Old Man), the shows celebrated his 80th birthday and six decades in music.
