Depeche Mode will include four previously unreleased tracks from their latest album Memento Mori on a new live project set to arrive on December 5.
Memento Mori: Mexico City will highlight performances from the band’s three-night run at Foro Sol Stadium in 2023. The unreleased tracks — “In the End,” “Survive,” “Life 2.0,” and “Give Yourself to Me” — all come from the original 2022 recording sessions for Memento Mori.
The first of these songs, “In the End,” will be released to streaming services on October 24. A select group of fans already heard the track early when it played during the end credits of Depeche Mode: M, a new film that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in June.
Directed by Mexican filmmaker Fernando Frias, Depeche Mode: M is set for a limited theatrical run starting October 28. Rather than being a traditional concert film, Frias combines footage from the Memento Mori tour with an exploration of how Mexican culture views mortality. The documentary features narration from Daniel Giménez Cacho and includes interviews with fans, artists, and cultural commentators.
Mortality has been a central theme for Depeche Mode, as suggested by the album’s title. Memento Mori was created in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic and the unexpected passing of Andy Fletcher, the band’s keyboardist and founding member, in February 2022.
After its theatrical debut, Depeche Mode: M will be released physically on December 5. A box set will include the film on DVD and Blu-Ray, plus a second disc with a more traditional concert film, Memento Mori: Mexico City, also directed by Frias. A double-disc live album will be part of the set as well, and it will be released separately on CD and vinyl.
