B.O.A Mook is an artist, entrepreneur and visionary hailing from Memphis with much more than music to offer to the rap game. Whether it be his clothing line, his label or anything else, his motto remains the same: “Believe. Overcome. Achieve.” B.O.A is more than an abbreviation for him, it’s a community-centric lifestyle that everyone who knows and respects him follows.
In this exclusive Q&A, B.O.A Mook opens up about the stories behind the music, lessons learned along the way, and what keeps their passion alive.
TheLoudMagazine: What’s a personal achievement outside of music that you’re particularly proud of?
B.O.A MOOK: My batting average was over .400 the last two seasons in the Nashville Sandlot Baseball League after a 15 year hiatus from competitive baseball.
TheLoudMagazine: What role do family and friends play in your life and career?
B.O.A MOOK: Mostly my friends and family are to thank for keeping me from going crazy. The Nashville grind will definitely take its toll on anybody so it’s good to be able to have conversations with family and close friends that just completely take your mind off it.
TheLoudMagazine: How do you manage stress and maintain mental well-being?
B.O.A MOOK: The last few years I’ve learned to manage stress by leaning into my hobbies. Whether the main source of stress is related to music or something personal, getting out on a baseball field, golf course, or nearby body of water with a fishing pole is a great way to have a little fun, forget about whatever has me down in the dumps, and hopefully put things back in perspective.
TheLoudMagazine: What’s one piece of advice you wish you could give your younger self?
B.O.A MOOK: Listen to other people less, trust your gut more.
TheLoudMagazine: How do you maintain a sense of authenticity in your work and personal life?
B.O.A MOOK: I’ve always thought the easiest way to be authentic is try not to change who you are too much between your personal life and professional life. Obviously most of us have some sort of amplified version of ourselves for when we’re performing on stage, I think as long as that person is a real piece of yourself and you’re not trying to become someone totally different every time you perform then you’re in prime position to “maintain authenticity”.
TheLoudMagazine: What hobbies or activities help you relax and recharge?
B.O.A MOOK: To be honest if I’m looking to relax and recharge I’m probably either sleeping or watching something on TV. If I’m not outside doing something then I’m probably doing just about nothing inside.
TheLoudMagazine: How do you approach personal growth and self-improvement?
B.O.A MOOK: I’m always looking for ways to grow and better myself, I believe one of the most important things an artist can do for their art is to continue to expand their field of vision and always be looking for ways to get better. Miles Davis said “It’s not about standing still and becoming safe. If anybody wants to keep creating they have to be about change.” and that’s a standard I try to keep in all areas of my life.
TheLoudMagazine: What are some of your favorite ways to practice self-care?
B.O.A MOOK: My idea of self care may not be the same as most people, when you’re putting so much energy into music it’s pretty easy to become physically sedentary so I try to get active as much as I possibly can. I think it’s important to use my body as much as I can while I’m still somewhat young, and anytime I find myself physically exhausted from something my mind is usually pretty much at ease.
