Norah Jones is creating original music for a forthcoming stage adaptation of Practical Magic.
On Monday, producers confirmed that a theatre version of the 1998 film starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, which was inspired by Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel, is currently being developed.
Peter Duchan, known for Dogfight, is writing the book alongside Hoffman, while Jones is teaming up with producer Gregg Wattenberg to craft the score and lyrics.
Maria Friedman, who directed Merrily We Roll Along, is set to direct the production.
Although Jones has not spoken publicly about the project, she shared an Instagram post describing Practical Magic as a “spellbinding new musical.”
The caption read: “Belladonna and the rose. Secrets only sisters know. Our shared craft now turns a page. Something's brewing for the stage,”
The project will be the first time Jones has composed music for a theatrical musical.
The Come Away with Me singer released her ninth studio record, Visions, in 2024.
Hoffman has expressed her excitement about seeing her story reimagined for theatre audiences.
"I'm so excited to be working with my amazing collaborators on bringing Practical Magic to the stage," she said in a statement to Deadline. "This story of love and sisterhood is meant for the theatre. Music is the heart and soul of Practical Magic, you can hear it as you read the book, even though it isn't there. Now you will finally hear the story as I always imagined it. You will hear magic."
Details regarding casting and scheduling have yet to be confirmed.
The original Practical Magic film, directed by Griffin Dunne, followed Bullock and Kidman as Sally and Gillian Owens, sisters born into a family of witches. Raised by their eccentric aunts, they learn to embrace and use practical magic as they come of age.
The two stars have since reunited for a follow up film, which is expected to arrive in September 2026.
