2Slimey is an underground rapper who has gained massive online attention over the past year. However, not all of that attention has been because of the quality of his music. Those familiar with his work know his songs often feature heavy distortion, strong autotune effects, and lyrics that can be difficult to understand.
He is part of a newer wave of underground artists who seem to focus more on being shocking or unconventional rather than traditional musical appeal. Listening to a 2Slimey track often feels like being hit with layers of chaotic sound, which some listeners find entertaining while others think it sounds over the top. While younger fans may enjoy this experimental style, plenty of others strongly dislike it.
2Slimey experienced that divide firsthand over the weekend when he competed on PlaqueBoyMax's Song Wars show. Other contestants included 1300Saint, Slayr, and several more artists. For anyone unfamiliar, Song Wars is a competition where artists present new tracks to a panel of judges who then decide which song stands out the most.
This week’s judging panel featured Southside, DJ Akademiks, BruceDropEmOff, and ImDontai, among others. It was during this episode that they were introduced to 2Slimey’s unique sound, and based on their reactions in the clip circulating online, it clearly was not their taste.
Most of the judges ended up scoring the track extremely low, with several giving it a 0 out of 10. DJ Akademiks was the only judge who offered a slightly more generous score, giving it a 5 out of 10. While still not a strong rating, it was noticeably higher than the others.
2Slimey did not appear to take the criticism well. At one point, he became frustrated and eventually left the call entirely, which surprised PlaqueBoyMax and the rest of the participants.
When creating music with such a distinct and polarizing style like 2Slimey does, it is almost inevitable that reactions will be mixed. This moment may end up being an important learning experience for him moving forward.
