The past few years have not been easy for Justin Bieber. Between health struggles and personal challenges, he has gone through a lot. How much of that situation falls on him is open to interpretation.
Still, he has made enough progress to return to a major stage and perform in front of a massive crowd again. He marked that return last night as the headliner for night two of Coachella.
That said, Bieber stayed true to his recent approach by doing something unexpected during his set. Around the middle of the performance, he sat down in a chair with a MacBook placed on a table in front of him.
For roughly thirty minutes, the “Baby” singer went through his earlier catalog and played the music videos tied to those songs. While interacting with the crowd, he joked, “How far back do you go? Are you really with the sh*t?” as reported by the Los Angeles Times.
During that stretch, Bieber also went off on different tangents, showing meme clips of himself along with viral moments like “Deez Nutz.” It ended up being a very unusual way to present his music, and it left people online unsure how to react.
Looking at the reactions under Kurrco’s Twitter post about his YouTube Premium set, it is clear that opinions are split. Some fans really enjoyed the switch from the usual high energy, production heavy performances. “Coachella was absolutely made the right choice by picking him to headline the show. I mean who could’ve thought he’d turn a concert into a YouTube watch party? And this was insane too,” one fan wrote, for example.
On the other hand, some viewers felt the performance did not deliver. “Sh*t made me go to sleep,” one disappointed fan commented.
No matter how people feel about it, the moment has definitely brought a lot of attention to Coachella. It is also likely to build even more curiosity, whether positive or negative, when Bieber returns for the second weekend on Saturday, April 18.
If you were wondering, the full set list from his performance is shown above. As expected, the Canadian star performed several tracks from the Swag album series while also including fan favorites like “Sorry,” “Where R U Now,” “Confident,” and more.
